For More Information

Underwriting Life and Health Insurance is a stand-alone self-study course that introduces risk assessment principles applied to underwriting individual and group life and health insurance, including specialized policies and supplemental coverages. Students will benefit by learning the fundamentals of underwriting as they relate to current industry practices. It replaces UND 385.

The basis for the course is Life and Health Insurance Underwriting, 2nd edition, which was revised in 2006.

LOMA's underwriting course (UND 386) will benefit anyone interested in medical impairments and the fundamentals of risk selection as practiced in life and health insurance companies. LOMA designed this course to fill a need expressed by member companies for a survey course to educate new life and health underwriters. However, this introductory course is also suitable for claim reviewers, actuaries, agents, and others in the insurance industry who must understand underwriting terminology and concepts.

Topics Covered:

  •  Principles of Underwriting
  • The Underwriting Position
  • Legal Aspects of Underwriting Individual Policies
  • Underwriting Activities and Technology
  • Underwriting Individual Life Insurance: Medical Factors
  • Underwriting Individual Life Insurance: Financial Factors
  • Underwriting Individual Life Insurance: Personal Factors
  • Underwriting Business Insurance, Specialized Policies, Replacements, and Supplemental Benefits
